Wow! The word we used to describe our reaction to this city.
First impressions, what a clean and friendly city – a million miles from the image I had of the old thirties gangster city.
Staying at the Club Quarters Hotel, in the Wacker region of Chicago we were well placed to see the city sights. We were right opposite the Trump Tower, the old Sears building and the Wrigley building. With our short whistle stop tour, we had to take in the sites as quickly as we could.
This included taking a Wendella Boat trip (thanks to our daughter Jo, who treated her Dad to this for his birthday). The tour took us out on the river where our guide pointed out the key landmarks and architecture. We then went into a large lock and waited for the water to level, before we went out onto Lake Michigan. What a magical sight the city lights gave to the backdrop of this wonderful city edging the lake. I would recommend this tour as a great way to sit back and enjoy the sites.
We spoke to a few other tourists on the boat trip (all American) who confirmed that Chicago was a best kept secret and they couldn’t believe they had never been before!
